Are Electric Cars More Expensive to Insure? | Falcon West

By Peter Brecht | Updated October 4th, 2025

Before insurance, I spent over ten years working with premium automotive brands.

Tesla, as an innovative automaker, has carved out a unique position in the automotive industry by challenging traditional sales and production models.

I still love going to cars and coffee events, and my favorite car is a Porsche 992 GT3 Touring in Fjord Green.

I’m also a fan of electric vehicles (EVs) despite the higher insurance costs, because their overall cost of ownership remains attractive with less routine maintenance. Many consumers now purchase their Tesla directly through the company’s website, reflecting how automakers are shifting to online sales platforms.

Tesla Dominates

Tesla accounts for 50-65% of EV sales, depending on the year, with popular models such as the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y leading the market. However, as you’ll see below, the brand is more expensive to repair in most categories. I’d still consider getting one, and I once took a Model Y overnight because I was quite close to getting one.

Unlike traditional automakers, Tesla does not follow the conventional model year system; instead, it updates its vehicles’ hardware and software continuously, making its models more flexible and innovative. Tesla vehicles are often sold directly to consumers through company-owned stores and online sales, bypassing traditional dealership sales.

Despite higher repair costs, many consumers are attracted to Tesla’s innovative approach.

Batteries

Electric car batteries are the primary driver for the difference in repair costs for two reasons.

  1. EVs that need repairs must often be disconnected from the battery pack and de-energized to start work. In addition, other components, such as the electric motor and related devices, may also need to be disconnected.
  2. Batteries can’t be repaired, so if they are damaged, they must be replaced. Depending on the cell system, the cost can be anywhere from $4,000 to $20,000. The battery pack, unlike a traditional fuel tank or engine, is a complex device that stores energy and requires advanced engineering to manufacture and protect.

Labor Costs

Electric vehicles require specialized technicians for repairs, leading to higher labor costs than conventional vehicles. Not all repair shops are equipped to handle EVs, limiting your options and potentially increasing repair times and costs.

Parts Availability

EV parts, especially for newer models, can be harder to source than traditional vehicle parts, contributing to longer repair times and higher costs. This limited availability can impact insurance costs.

Vehicle Value

EVs often have higher upfront costs than comparable ICE vehicles, leading to higher replacement costs in the event of a total loss, which typically translates into higher comprehensive and collision coverage premiums.

Model Comparison

This chart compares the insurance rates for traditional and electric versions of the same model from both BMW and Toyota. Note: I’m only including the ICE equivalent for models where one exists.

Rivian

Rivian’s trucks and SUVs tend to have higher insurance costs due to their premium pricing, advanced technology, and unique design. As a newer manufacturer with limited repair history and parts availability, insurers may charge higher premiums.

Tesla

Tesla’s higher insurance costs are largely due to expensive repair parts, proprietary systems requiring specialized labor, and high vehicle values. Additionally, Tesla’s direct-to-consumer sales model means there are fewer authorized repair centers, potentially slowing down the repair process and increasing costs.

Lucid

Lucid vehicles, known for their luxury and high performance, have some of the highest insurance rates in the EV segment. The premium pricing, cutting-edge technology, and limited repair infrastructure contribute to these elevated rates.

BMW

BMWs, especially EVs, tend to have higher insurance costs due to their high vehicle values, expensive repair parts, and advanced technology. The performance-oriented nature of some models can also contribute to higher risk profiles. Vehicles can be built on the same production line. BMW has worked toward this with its Nu Classe for the last decade.

Summary

Electric vehicles generally have higher insurance costs than their ICE counterparts due to their higher vehicle values, expensive battery replacements, specialized repair requirements, and limited repair networks. However, insurance rates can vary significantly depending on the model, insurer, and individual driver profile.

For those seeking the most cost-effective EV insurance options, vehicles like the Toyota bZ4X or Chevy Bolt may offer more affordable rates. In contrast, high-end brands like Lucid or Tesla tend to have the highest insurance costs.

It’s always advisable to compare insurance quotes from multiple providers to find the best rate for your specific EV model and personal circumstances. Consulting with an insurance professional can also provide valuable insights into the most suitable coverage options for EV owners.
